OKAY SO the main issue i think i was having with namseok is that i pretty much caaaan’t write Hoseok, he’s so complex, what do?? but i think i FINALLY FIGURED HIM OUT /quiet screaming/ i mean, you know. for my purposes, anyway. it probably isn’t the best characterization in the world but it’s at least good as a starting point so i can feel him out! 😀

ANYWAY SO HOSEOK. YEAH! i have a tendency to mix up different facets of personalities in a big goopy swirl when i’m writing so that i can make shit work, and for some reason i’ve always felt that i fall short with Hoseok.

BUT! OKAY!!! (i’m so excited about this sorry) so Hoseok has like… this is gonna sound awk, but he’s got two faces? two identities? those two parts of him are almost entirely distinct individuals and he can switch them on and off seamlessly.

so with Hoseok, his two separate/multi-faceted personalities that i’ve started calling Hoseok and J-Hope. he’s J-Hope in almost every single thing we’ve ever been shown in bombs and stuff like that – goofy moodmaker with the funny voices and weird aegyo – but you do still see some flashes of Hoseok. Hoseok is who he is when he needs to straighten out the group and they aren’t responding to distraction techniques – where he’ll kinda go chill and a little quiet and his voice gets lower and smoother, and sometimes his satoori gets a little stronger. but then he’ll switch right back and it’s like nothing happened.

what i think i like best about the namseok dynamic is how confusing this could be for Namjoon – while he’s good at observing people he’s not so good at linking things together until afterward. i think i’ve talked about how Namjoon really does think through everything he says? it just doesn’t occur to him that his equation may be missing all the data he needs until he’s said it and whatever happens happens.

so we’ve got Hoseok, this guarded interpersonal mastermind who’s constructed this elaborate (yet still sincere) facade in order to protect himself and other people. and we’ve got Namjoon, a scientific observer who can’t always find the right correlation. they could frustrate and confuse each other, but they’d also be able to actually relax around each other. Hoseok can save his energy and just be Hoseok. Namjoon can stop overthinking stuff because Hoseok always knows what he means even if he says it wrong.

they’re still an odd couple to me but – they can really work, i think??

SO WRITE MORE NAMSEOK, THANK
